Origin
As native indigenous peoples of Taiwan, the languages we use not only has a deep relationship with one another, they are also related to many languages on the islands of the Pacific and Indian Ocean, forming the Austronesian linguistic groups. Under the influence of colonization and capitalism, the Austronesian have changed their lives and economic activities, which gradually effected their crucial cultural living styles. However, the indigenous areas possess the abundant natural resources, and the relationship between the indigenous and the land is like a life community sharing an umbilical cord. We must respect all life on the land because we are also a part of the eco-system, helping and depending on each other so we can acquire the sustainability of life. The relationship with the land is a “land ethic,” a balance of the ecology that has embedded in our cultural life, found in many of the teachings from our ancestors, including taboos, rituals and folklores. Therefore, we as the indigenous peoples have lived by these teachings and established a unique wisdom of the mountain and forest and a cultural lifestyle. For the past decades, the economy development of indigenous peoples both domestic and international has especially focused on the industry types based on their culture and knowledge. For instance, the additional value and transformation of the traditional agricultural produce, agricultural attractions, cultural creative industries, preservation of the old residence and ecotourism. Take the old stone house village of Pingtung County Wu-tai Township Rukai Kucabuane for example. It has been elected to be one of the cultural heritage sites of 2016 funded by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization World Monument Fund, and Pingtung Chunri Township old Tjuvecekadan Paiwan stone house village has been listed as one of the potential world heritage sites. For the reasons above, this project wishes to facilitate dialogue amongst the industrial, academic and governmental representatives through a Austronesian International Forum on Indigenous Industries Development to discuss the aspects of “Traditional Agriculture of the Indigenous, Marketing of Farm Produce and Agricultural Attractions,” “Cultural Creative Merchandise and Marketing” and “Old Tribal Residence Preservation and Tourism.” Moreover, it aims to bridge the interactive network of the Austronesian countries which not only can raise global awareness of the knowledge of Austronesian culture, promote cultural communication internationally and publicize Taiwan indigenous and status worldwide.
